Your next trip? Try a prison. Who would want to stay in a “prison” hotel? Surprisingly, they are becoming increasingly popular

Selecting a hotel that enhances your travel experience is a delicate art, much like choosing the right book to bring on holidays. Often a hotel´s history is shortland for the history of the destination itself. There are buildings all over the world with illustrious past lives as castles, private residences, manors, monasteries and even prisons…

We are thrilled to present the Prison turned Hotels selection. These properties may be graceful or strange, eccentric or singular, we’d like to show you the wackiest, weirdest and most interesting.

The Liberty Hotel – Boston, USA

Located in Boston´s  Beacon Hill Neighborhood USA This transformed prison has been transformed into an elegant boutique Hotel

What do you name a hotel set in the one infamous Charles Street Jail? The Liberty, of course!

The Liberty Hotel opened in 2007 as a 300 room luxury property. Rooms from $495. This is a hotel we wouldn’t mind being locked up in.

Lloyd Hotel Amsterdam. Swanky design has softened the interior of this 1920s building in the revamped Eastern Docklands neighdourhood and it´s now a colorful hotel, rich in character. Used as a prison during World War II the 118 rooms are rated from one to five starts. From 125€

The Old Jail Bed and Breakfast located in Taylors Falls Minnesota. The former nineteenth century jail has been converted into a bed and breakfast to offer its’ guests an unforgettable experience.

HI-Ottawa Hostel offers a clean, safe and unique overnight experience for hostellers, backpackers and travellers of all kinds. The hostel offers shared accommodation in converted Jail cells, private accommodation as well as regular shared dorm rooms , ideal for families and groups.

The place is creepy  The location is very central to all Ottawa´s attractions

Hotel Katajanokka is located in Helsinki, Finland  and it was still used as a prison up until little over a decade ago.

Hostel Celica Ljublinjana. It may be located in the city´s most youthful and artistic district now, but this building  used to house a military prison. It has since had makeover involving 70 or more artist and it´s possible to stay in one of the 20 rather basic but renovated dormer cells, complete with the original window bars, that sleep 2 or 3 people. Four Seasons Istanbul 

The location is unbeatable – just a few minutes’ walk from the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace. And as you’d expect from a Four Seasons, there’s a spa offering massage and facials, plus women and men’s saunas and gym.
