Hiking and Climbing in Madrid-Spain
La Pedriza Regional Park and Reserve of the Biosphere.
Sierra de Guadarrama Madrid
La Pedriza The park is located on the southern slopes of the Guadarrama mountain range. Biosphere Reserve. Regional Park of the High River basin of Manzanares. It is one of the largest granitic ranges of Europe and holds numerous peaks, It is a spectacular area with crazy rock geometry, a playground for any climber, rocky cliffs, streams and meadows. La Pedriza de Manzanares is a fantastic composition of eroded and rounded rocks complex hidden places of contrasting colours and irregular forms.
How to get there: Access from Madrid Capital.
By Road M-607 higway diretion to Colmenar Viejo until connecting with M-609 previously the M-862, and finally the M-608. The Village of Manzanares El Real. La Pedriza.
By Bus: Line 724 from Plaza Castilla – Madrid.

La Pedriza offers walkers 32 square kilometres of spectacular scenery, areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You don’t have to walk the Trail in one go to enjoy the best it has to offer. There are a number of circular walks and climbing routes for everyone to enjoy. There’s something here for everyone, an assortment of routes from those that you could quite happily walk or scramble up, to and a handful of 8a 8b level, slab climbs, probably amongst the largest concentration of hard slab climbing in the world. Nearly a thousand rock climbing routes of all difficulties are available to rock climbers. There are some great routes, short and long.
You can start, just follow the painted white and yellow lines and enjoy the unique scenery and spectacular views. Smaller tracks named PR Short Distance Tracks. or Long Distance Tracks (From Valencia to Lisbon 600Km.)
In La Pedriza many tracks wind between rocks and small passages with suggestive names, like The Chikens Bridge ( El Puente de los Pollos) The Ghosts Los Fantasmas, highest peak in la Pedriza, The Elephant Rock (El Elefante), La Tortuga (The Turtle). El Yelmo (Roman Helmet) Las Torres (The Towers) La Calavera (The Skull).
You can easily drive into the park where one of your main bases is The parking Bar – Restaurant El Canto Cochino but there are some Parkings, the first one is closed: Collado del Campuzano, the second is Parking of Quebrantaherraduras La Pedriza, Parking La Rana.
What you must remember when you go is that La Pedriza only allows a certain amount of cars, (185) so on busy days you need to get there very early or be prepared to wait. La Pedriza de Manzanares being the most protected area and as such qualifying as an Integral Reserve Biosphere UNESCO ” The earth doesn’t belong to us , but to our children” (Ecosystem Conservation)
For the more adventurous people, Manzanares el Real also counts with a group Hostel , a camping site at the foot of the mountain range and guarded refuge Giner de lo Rios in the hearth of La Pedriza. Camping is not allowed in the park although you are able to bivi. It is recommended that you take water with you as the water quality and quantity can vary a lot.
The fauna is rich in birds of prey or raptors, over 100 pairs of Vultures is the largest in the Madrid area, Voulture is the indiputable king of the fauna of La Pedriza, while the mountain goats (Cabra Montesa) are widely spread in its most hidden parts.
